Synopsis

The rapid worldwide spread of COVID-19 has highlighted one downside of greater global connectivity – the potential for not merely goods and people, but also viruses, to travel across borders. The pandemic has also drawn attention to how deeply integrated supply chains are. Cities around the world are now concerned about their food security and potential shortages of surgical masks and ventilators. Some countries are responding with stockpiling and economic nationalism, limiting their exports, while others such as Singapore are working to keep trade flows moving. There remains great uncertainty about how a post-pandemic global economy will look like, but some trends are beginning to emerge.

  • With COVID-19 exacerbating animosity between the United States and China, could the US-China trade war evolve into a fracturing of the global monetary order?
  • Will the pandemic accelerate the shift away from globalisation towards greater regionalisation, particularly within Asia?
  • How can global and regional supply chains be more resilient against future disruptions?
