Synopsis
(Please note that the synopsis may be subjected to changes.)
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has had significant implications for global health, but its impact on the US-China relationship has been equally important. Driven by domestic imperatives, Beijing and Washington have engaged in a war of words to shape the narrative of the outbreak. Yet, both countries need each other – the US would benefit from Chinese medical equipment and expertise, while China would benefit from demand from external markets such as the US to jumpstart its economy. Cooperation, however, appears unlikely at this stage. Much is at stake for both countries, and their interactions over the next few months would shape both their recovery from COVID-19 and their future relationship. This, in turn, would have significant implications for Southeast Asia’s own recovery from the ravages of the outbreak, and impact the overall geopolitical landscape of the region.
- How have Washington and Beijing attempted to shape the narrative of the COVID-19 outbreak in their countries and overseas?
- How is the US-China relationship expected to change over the coming months, and what effect could this have on the economies of both countries?
- How could US-China tensions affect Southeast Asia’s recovery and geopolitical landscape following the COVID-19 outbreak?
