For over 50 years, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has attempted to bring the region together. But studies have shown that although people in ASEAN countries are generally aware that the grouping exists, it is mostly seen as an economic body, or a network for elites and bureaucrats, not citizens. Is it possible to build a shared Southeast Asian identity and closer ties between the people of our region?
