Chairman of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs Associate Professor Simon Tay has been invited to serve on a UN Commission: the Financial Sector Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking (“Liechtenstein Initiative”).
The global, multi-stakeholder project is established by the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research, the Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein, and the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia. The Commission will be convened by H.E. Dr Aurelia Frick, the Foreign Minister of Liechtenstein and co-convened by Professor Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank and Nobel Peace Laureate, and the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia. It will be chaired by Ms Fiona Reynolds, CEO of the UN-supported Principles for Responsible Investment, and will have around 20 members — including Professor Tay — at the C or Ambassadorial level.
The SIIA will lend support to Prof Tay’s involvement with its policy research strengths in Asia and ASEAN, where there are many different perspectives. This adds to the SIIA’s work on the financial sector in relation to sustainability and green finance and labour concerns in the resource and plantation sectors.
“Governments from different regions have to come to a consensus and do their part,” said Prof Tay. “But there is also much that the financial sector can do to support.”
