A first-hand account of Myanmar’s road to democratic reform
Singapore, 30 October 2017: U Soe Thane (former Union Minister for Industry and Union Minister for the President’s Office) is launching a book chronicling a first-hand account of the challenges the government faced in advocating Myanmar’s democratic reform under the U Thein Sein government. The book, titled “Myanmar’s Transformation & U Thein Sein: An Insider’s Account by U Soe Thane”, will be launched on 31st October 2017, Tuesday at the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA).
The book captures the historical milestone of Myanmar’s pivotal democratic transition under the U Thein Sein government. During a span of five critical years, the country shifted from a military controlled dictatorship to a functioning democracy. The book also offers a glimpse into U Thein Sein’s management style and personality, which had much influence on the way the government was run.
“The book is intended to provide its readers an opportunity to review and understand the backdrop and the behind-the-scene actors and activities that mark the historic event of Myanmar’s transformation from military to democratic government,” U Soe Thane said.
“It also touched on the numerous challenges and hardships, both expected and unexpected, of former President U Thein Sein and his administration faced during their term, as well as myriads of lessons and positive takeaways for current and future policymakers, governments and historians. I hope it would serve as a valuable record to keep for Myanmar’s history,” he added.
The book will be on sale at the talk, at S$25 per copy. All proceeds will be donated to Shwe Kantarawaddy Education Foundation, a registered civil society organisation in Myanmar. The charitable foundation primarily focuses on supporting educational expenses of orphans and underprivileged children in Myanmar’s Kayah State.
