In Myanmar, a team with little experience with democracy during their lifetimes transformed the country from a military controlled dictatorship to a functioning democracy within a short period of less than five years.
U Soe Thane, who served as Minister for Industry and Minister for the President’s Office under the leadership of the U Thein Sein government recounts the story of how he and a team of ministers endured hardships, oppositions and sabotages, to bring about the change that people wanted.
In this insider’s account, U Soe Thane describes the critical milestones achieved and how the government overcame major situational crises during its time in power. It also offers a glimpse into President U Thein Sein’s management style and personality, which had much influence on the way the government was run.
This book is a documentation of the history of Myanmar during these five critical years. The actions taken during these years have undoubtedly altered the expectations and aspirations of the Myanmar people, and has inevitably shaped the future of Myanmar for the better. In this evening talk at the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, join U Soe Thane himself as he shares how the government initiated change, drove the peace process, pushed for good and clean governance planted the seeds of economic reform and more from his new book, “Myanmar’s Transformation & President U Thein Sein: An Insider’s Account by U Soe Thane” (2017).
The book is available for purchase at S$25 per copy and all proceeds will go to a local Myanmar charity in Kayah. Only cash is accepted.
