It has been over six months since the military coup in Myanmar and ASEAN leaders met yesterday to discuss the appointment of the ASEAN special envoy to Myanmar. On 1 August 2021, Myanmar’s military ruler said it is “ready to work on ASEAN cooperation within the ASEAN framework, including the dialogue with the ASEAN special envoy in Myanmar”. In an interview with China Daily, Associate Professor Simon Tay, Chairman of the SIIA, said, “Being a pathfinder, ASEAN has a responsibility to all the stakeholders and must, in a way, move forward but move quite carefully.” Prof. Tay reiterated that ASEAN has a key role to play as an intermediary between Myanmar and the international community, especially as the pandemic rages on.
