The ambitious Belt and Road Initiative is set to expand China’s role as an economic and strategic partner for many countries in the Asia-Pacific and beyond. In addition, China’s growing influence comes at a time when the United States seems to be turning increasingly inward, leaving China as the potential global leader in many aspects of international affairs. In this context, how should Singapore and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) manage relations with China?
