The SIIA is participating in the ASEAN-ISIS-IIR Taiwan Dialogue, a regular Track II dialogue organised by the ASEAN Institutes of Strategic and International Studies (ASEAN-ISIS) network which the SIIA is a founding member of, and Taiwan’s Institute of International Relations (IIR).
The ASEAN-Taiwan Dialogue held in Taipei aims to serve as platform for greater cooperation between Taiwan and ASEAN. It is a full day dialogue which will be concluded with a closed-door roundtable session with a selected participants. Delegates will discuss the trends and issues affecting ASEAN and Taiwan relations and how these may impact business opportunities the region. The dialogue also aims to be a platform for both the public and private sector to network and exchange ideas on key issues affecting the development of ASEAN-Taiwan relations.
Against the backdrop of Madam Tsai Ing-wen’s “New Southbound Policy” targeted at strengthening Taiwan’s economic, people-to-people and cultural ties with countries with Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent, this dialogue takes place at a timely juncture where Taiwan has renewed its commitment and interest to invest in ASEAN. As Taiwan seeks to diversify its economy, Taiwanese companies have begun to look elsewhere to relocate their factories and Southeast Asia could serve as a viable manufacturing and consumer destination for Taiwanese businesses.
The dialogue will serve as a platform to strengthen ASEAN and Taiwanese business links whilst enabling ASEAN-ISIS delegates to engage with representative from the DPP to better understand their policies and Taiwan’s future investment opportunities. It will also deepen ASEAN’s Track II diplomacy with Taiwan, paving the way for greater cooperation.
