There has been some uncertainty about the future of Asia’s regional order. Observers have raised concerns about how US-China relations will fare under the Trump administration, especially with Beijing expanding its influence globally. Although regional bodies such as ASEAN has sought to preserve the peace and prosperity of the region, the world today is different. ASEAN’s leadership faces new and diverse challenges and questions regarding its effectiveness has surfaced. Addressing these new challenges, the theme of Singapore’s 2018 chairmanship of ASEAN is “Resilient and Innovative”, illustrating how ASEAN aims to stay relevant in an increasingly complex global and social landscape.
This session at the SIIA takes a look at the challenges and opportunities facing ASEAN in 2018, in the context of Singapore’s chairmanship and also in relation to the broader climate facing the world as a whole.
