Senior fellow Oh Ei Sun from the Singapore Institute of International Affairs caution that Mr Anwar “is playing a very dangerous game” by pressuring Dr Mahathir during a period of weakness, and could inherit a troubled house even if he succeeds.
“It is reminiscent of the duo’s tussle in 1998 following the Asian financial crisis,” he said, referring to the episode that resulted in national turmoil when Mr Anwar, then the deputy premier, was dismissed by Dr Mahathir and subsequently jailed for the controversial charges of sodomy and abuse of power.
